From what I recall, there is a special non a/c bracket you need, I think it changes the position of the alternator. It's been years since I looked at one, but a friend of mine has a 77 440 pw and I remember him going through this routine. If the compressor is going out, you should be able to leave it in there, if the bearing is going out, you can replace that on the compressor. Hope this helps.
