I have always lowered or removed the oil pan. Lower it if the oil pan gaskets aren't in to bad a shape. At least so you can put a good dab of RTV in the mating corners of the oil pan, TC and block..
Maybe a new front rubber oil pan gasket wouldn't hurt either...
