The air is used to keep the brakes AWAY from the drum. When the truck loses air, the brakes engage stopping the truck.
Isn't it funny on TV that a "runaway" truck on a hill that has "lost" it's air seems to always have "enough" to blow the airhorn all the way down to warn other drivers !!!!
