I've seen the results of two runaway engines, both Macks. I can't remember exactly what goes wrong but something lets loose in the injector pump and the engine continues to RPM at full throttle going wwwaaaayyyyy past the govener untill breakage (second time it was the rods). The only way to stop the motor is to cut off the air supply (your jacket shoved into the intake almost worked) I don't think the newer engines can do this.
