Ad-Aware is a great package. You will need to run it weekly/daily. Most web sites now use cookies in addition to spybots to track you so they can direct the "best" sales people in your direction. If you want to get rid of the spybot junk you'll need to move to non-windows (Microsoft) operating system such as Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OSx, Solaris or perhaps the OS2 replacement.
If you really want to be shocked/amazed -
READ the Microsoft XP and Office licensing agreement you clicked OK on.
Microsoft basically owns complete access to and control of everything (ALL the data) on your machine. They CAN REMOTELY disable your machine AND they ARE NOT liable for ANY damages.If you are dependant on software with the Microsoft license YOU SHOULD RECONSIDER YOUR CHOICE of SOFTWARE ASAP (or sooner) or plan to do it their way. NOT friendly stuff.
They always tell you at the Bank to read the fine print. You should see the stuff in the fine print in most software licenses.
Compare the typical license with the GPL license (www.gnu.org) and pick your software accordingly and carefully.
Remember to abide by your licenses. If you don't like the licenses FIND ANOTHER way - DON'T steal software.
I prefer GPL.
