The gin pole set-up that Kevin describes was an after-market installation by the Bell System, and possibly by light & power companies, too. A companion feature is/was the larger-than-usual winch, with a capstan at the right end of the shaft, and a bayonet-type connector at the left end. The connector, which was really just a big pin through the shaft, mated with a rig that held a cable spool. The winch was run and the spool collected or fed-out cable or wire.

I owned one of those trucks, with the big bolts coming out through the "cheeks" of the cab. They had been burned off, flush with the sheet metal, but were still visible. It was an ugly, unkind thing to have done to a beautiful truck.
