the sidewall 'indentation' he talks about is extra rubber put there to protect the rim from rock damage as well as the tire from the rim, a common design in off road tires. The ring is retained by the inside diameter of the bead and the air in the tube, not the slim indentation. Just try breaking one down without breaking the bead loose first.

It is not possible for a tire to roll off the rim of a split rim while ring is attached, without bead being cut because there is no 'drop center' to this design. I think this article does a disservice to anyone running perfctly safe tires on perfectly safe rims. Any personal experience out there ? I doubt that I'm the only one 'risking my life' with this mismatch.
