There are a number of factors about why trucks are turning into cars. Fact is that the majority of trucks never leave pavement and mostly are used for runs to the local Home Depot. Federal Safety and fuel regualations have a lot to do with why there is so much plastic and light guage sheet metal in the trucks.
Remember also that if you don't change the style or appearance of trucks you won't sell any and then we would be sitting here gripping about the demise of the US auto industry and the unemployed auto workers.
