All that I've seen is purple, but another test would be to mix a little bit with water. Silicone won't mix, DOT 3 will. You can also tell the difference by feel once you're used to both.

There's an article in MV mag this month about silicone in old vehicles. It says silicone doesn't swell up the rubber like DOT 3 does, so it can cause old seals to leak. He claims it's safe to add a little DOT 3 to the silicone to prevent this. I know most people say not to mix them at all, but maybe that's just folklore. It would certainly help with conversions if you don't have to flush every speck of DOT 3 out.
