Worn parts up top can do that. I have a cover that had the same problem so I took it apart. The pin is probably more loose than it should be, the shift lever slot is worn in the area when the pin is, and the reverse stop plug (big screw on the side) had deep groves worn it. These are probably the parts you'll need. Mine shifts well, but it vibrates causing a rattling noise. I can push on it a little forward to place it in air (not touching the rails) and it's quite.
