The history of the engine goes back to 1974, I put a rod through the flathead driveng a liitle hard, anyway I had a 283 Chevy with a Muncie SM420 tranny laying around and decided to install this combo after being unable to find a short block. 3rd` gear was chipped anyway and kept clunking. The change over involved making custom front mounts and using a crosmember from a 1955 chevy. This combo worked well but was grossly underpowered. Last year I decided for my truck's 30 year anniversery for my possesion of it, I would give it it's 2nd rebuild. Since I already had the Chevy tranny and mounts, I opted for a new 350 shortblock with a RV cam. I boosted this with headers, torkerII intake , eldebrock carb, electrinic ignition, headers ect.. I did nothing that would void my 3 year warranty. I upgraded the radiator to a pressurized large bore core, added an electric fan, Helitool power steering, VPW disc brakes in front, with EFI brake power boosters on front and rear. I also put on 100 amp alternator and a Vintage air air conditioning system. The truck is completely rewired`with a Painless wiring harness and fuse block. Because the firewall was a little rough, even after painting, it was covered with a stainless steel plate and polished. I found a manual winshield washer kit for a Dodge 6x6 and also installed this. With this engine, it has stainless steeel dual 2 1/2 " exhausts with flowmaster mufflers. The clutch was converted to hydraulic. The only problems are clearance for the fan, next time I'll use a short water pump, and the PTO sits about 6 inches high which interferes with the front PTO drive shaft. I'm currently looking for an adaptor to mount on a chelsa PTO to drop straight down about 6" or an adaptor that will allow to run a shaft out to the back a short distance and then reverse the direction. Overall I'm happy, now that I know a little more I'll try to do a restoration on the next vehicle rather than a adaptaion/conversion. Thanks for asking. I,m happy to share any details or post pictures if they may be helpful . Alan Koester
