When I bought my 59 W200 I had it hauled from Palouse, Washington to Colfax, IA which is about 1600 miles. The cost was $950 so it worked out to about 60 cents/mile. The driver had a setup like you describe and had been picking up and dropping off others on the way back. He was from out East somewhere and had worked his way out to the West, then South, and then was headed back to the East when he dropped mine off.
A lot of it will be load planning and making sure that as many miles as possible are loaded miles.
