Are you sure it's gas and not oil. That big valve looking thing is the "metering valve" (PVC of sorts) that usually suck some oil and can smell like gas as gas or vapers settle in the area after stopping the engine.

1. Start you engine and warm it up to operating temperature and idle it for about 15 min.

2. Turn off the engine and take off the air cleaner and watch for about 10 min., for any vapors that looft out the carb. It's normal to see a few, but if you see quite a few, this means you either have a leaky float, incorrect float setting, or leaky valve and seat and should rebuild the carb.

I'm assuming the engine runs ok and your not presently experiencing any flooding problems in my providing the above.
