if you have a 2nd negative lead at coil, it must be for a tachometer. try disconnecting it, if it is shorted nothing will run. Coils fire when the neg side is no longer grounded, like when the points open. So , when the 'electronic points'are open, you would have 12v, when the 'electronic points' are closed, that wire goes to ground and should read 0v.
