Piston hitting the head from carbon build up is a dull knock simular to a rod. If your valve clearances are adjusted properly, I would get Mobil 1 15-50 or a can of CD-2 detergent and run in it. They both have high detergent properties for cleaning. Try that for awhile and if it doesn't work you may then need to tear down the engine and look for flat bottom tappets.
