You are correct about the additives being different in addition to the differences in the sulfer content that is allowed.

I don't have it in front of me, but the owner's manual for my 1990 Cummins 4BT has a chart in it to show what fuels can be run with the various injector pumps (rotary or inline, various manufacture). For some fuels such as 1D and 2D, you run them straight, for some others such as the jet fuels and heating oils, you have to add a small amount of engine oil (fresh) to insure that the pump is lubricated...

Of course, for folks who run on the highway without paying taxes (use fees), then you are preventing folks like me from having the funding needed to maintain the nation's highway/road system (and feeding the familly...).
