In North Carolina, you are allowed to display a tag from the year of manufacture (YOM) of the vehicle in place of the one issued to you at the time of registration as long as you have the tag of issue available for inspection.

This allows folks who are "in the know" to be able to tell what year your truck is even if you are not around to tell them. It also helps prevent destroying the "period" image a well restored/renovated vehicle presents when a modern tag is fitted.
