I asked at the California DMV and they will allow the original plate to remain on the vehicle only if there is a front AND a rear plate. I do not think California will permit another "period plate" to be substatuted. The only other way out here is to get a "historical" plate which looks bad and restricted when and where the vehicle can drive.

There seems to be quite a few sites out there listing this service. Just go to my favorite search engine www.dogpile.com and type in license plate restoration into the search field. Some appear to have step by step procedures.
