Yes, radiation and chemicals which are extremely hazardous to anyone not wearing protective gear, plus accident investigation and reconstruction makes it critical that as many parts as possible are recovered.
Early reports are indicating that one of the landing gear doors may have failed, allowing the 6,000+ degree temperature to enter the belly of the Orbiter. Telementry is showing extremely high tire temperatures.
A news conference is to be held at 3: EST.
