Normally,... more power from less displacement, longevity, fewer moving parts, less electrical components (plugs, distributor, etc.) Diesel fuel normally is less than gasoline, fuel economy is usually better for the power generated. There are downsides too, noise (except for the new generation Cummins ISB motors) smell, and top end (in relationship to the acceleration time it takes to get to top speed) Scarcity of fuel (that is changing).
Oh, and did I mention that a diesel can pull the planet?
