The winch puts considerable stress on the frame; I would think that the direction of the winches spooling should be such that the cable when winding up/pulling should be as close to inline with the frame as possible.
Six inches above or below would create a considerable lever for 8,000 pounds or more to twist the frame.
So, all things being equal I would set it up so that the pull is as close to in line with the frame as possible.
