Anything will wear out over time. By all appearances this winch is original, I have owned the truck for 28 years of it's 50 year life, Prior to my purchaseof the truck, it was in use by a logging company, and before that, the original owner was Pacific Gas & Electric co, it was used for power line work.
When I got the truck in 1974, I inspected the winch, the bronze gear had about 50% wear on it. It has been well serviced while in my hands, and has had a lot of HARD use! The bronze gear is the wear point on this design, so even if you are just unspooling or respooling the cable, it will inevitably wear out! Nothing out of the ordinary! I am sure however, this winch was placed under excessive strain at ssome point(s) in it's life!!
