Running without a battery is likely to damage an alternator
because the voltage spikes can get too high and fry the diodes.
This is the theory, anyway. I wonder if it is perhaps not so
true anymore now that better diodes are dirt cheap. Maybe the
story got started back in the early days with germanium diodes.
In any case if you were really stuck, and worried about the
alternator, you could just disconnect it till the batter was
reconnected.

Starting the truck on 12V would also require making sure all
lights, radio, etc were turned off or you'd burn the light bulbs
out in a hurry.

The other option is to use the 12V rig to PUSH-START the 6V one!
