Alan

Did you put the engine together yourself? I ask this because there may be two keyways cut on the front of the crank. (does anyone know if this is the same on all 230 engines?) One keyway is for the timing gear and one is for the pulley hub. If either of these guys is on the wrong keyway it will make timing the engine difficult. If the timing gear is on the wrong one you can start pulling the engine apart now. If the pulley is in the wrong spot that is easily fixed. Just pull it off and put it in the right place. You can check to see if the timing gear is in the right place by taking off the front valve cover and birnging the engine up to TDC. TDC can be verified by poking a welding rod down the small hole in the top of no. 6 cylinder. No. 6 is at the top when no. 1 is at TDC. (thanks to Alan Bowes for that tip) When no. 1 is at TDC you should check the in. and ex. valves on no. 1 to make sure they are completely closed. If they are completely closed then check to see that the pulley timing marks line up. If all of this checks out than this isn't the problem.

Have a nice day

Steve
