Using modern fuels in old flatheads?

I am looking for opinions and facts on the possible consequences (if any) of using modern fuel.
Not only is it unleaded (said to cause valve guide and seat problems), but, here in the N.E. US, they add alcohol based somthingorother to the gas (said to do awfull things to fuel systems?).
Are you folks using gasoline additives? Rebuilding engines? Not worrying as much as me?
