Hi Keith. No way to tie the engine number to the chassis number. It may be possible to make out some vague sequence of serials for the T214 engines, but they were used on so many vehicles for so long....
As I said, the short number you gave was issued to a 1940 VC1 Command Car. How it got on your carryall I know not, especially if it was under numerous layers of paint. If it stayed with the brach of service it was issued to the USA number should not have changed, as this number was the pricipal method of tracing it in the military. In addition the number is too short and would look "wrong" to anyone who worked with the trucks, and especially to an MP who was suspicious. Even the format of number / US looks out of place, as these things were marked at the factory and did not vary much. It could be that there is a good reason for it, or that it was a brach of service thing (unlikely as the number had already been issued on a Dodge) or that it was painted for a film, who knows. I'd photograph the original markings and then just mark it with a "correct" number from the sequence I gave you, unless you can dig up any more info to the contrary. Gordon
