They look similar, I think the 541 is newer and has a slightly higher torque rating. Both have many ratio sets. There is one overdrive set, I think only on the 540. It's rare. There are a very few 540 cases with the Dodge PW old type pattern. Others can be adapted by removing the bellhousing, drilling new holes, milling the center hole, machining the input shaft sometimes, and getting a different clutch disk. sometimes it's easy, sometimes impossible, depends on the particular box. An overdrive version is worth having.
