Transfer case confusion

I have run into a problem that has me very confused, a guy named Bruce who has a 66 Power Wagon Town Wagon blew the side of his transfer case out.
He was trying to tow someone out of a ditch, and the PTO blew up the transfer case.

I was trying to help him out, so I sent him to another guy I know who had an extra NP 201.

Bruce took one look at the transfer case and said it was too small for his truck, and that the location of the inputs for the driveshafts were off by an inch or so.

Now it turns out that Bruce tried to change his transfer case before, and ran into the same problem, so it's not just his eye fooling him.

Both Bruce's transfer case, and the NP 201 say that they are 1.96:1 ratio on them, and Bruce says that his PTO hook up on the transfer case is something like 9" long.

My NP 201 PTO hook up on my 64' PW TW is not that big, so I am confused.

Does anyone know what Bruce has for a transfer case? I can't seem to figure it out, all I could think of was that someone(maybe even Ma MOPAR) put in an WM300 transfer case.

Any thoughts? I need to know what he might have so we can get this truck back on the road.

Thanks!

Eric
