Originally, there was a u shaped, flexible channel that was not very water tght. This is one of the reasons that the lower half of the frames rotted so much.
Instead, use a silicone made for exterior glass applications. Try a hardware store, automotive store, and or an auto glass installer.
One 10 oz tube should be fine.
Fill the channel with the silicone and put the glass in. Scrap off the excess.
Of course, you can get the original part from VPW.
