Because it has a carb instead of fuel injection. Fuel injection is nice, don't have to keep pumping the gas to start and no carb problems, choke etc. But it seems to me that the fuel injection systems could be tuned better to get better fuel economy, or power. I think they are set up for a happy medium. My old Ferd I had in high school had a 1 barrel on it and got 9mpg.6 cyl 300 1970 vintage 2 wheel drive. (Back in 1983)My father had a D100 with a slant 6 that got 18mpg. later my Goof motors corp 4wheel with a 350 got about 12mpg, my 88 W250 with a 360 got 10, my M880 318, edelbrock intake and carb, gets 10mpg but I need to rejet the carb, its running lean. my friends Durango with a 318 gets 14mpg.
