I agree, in most cases the Allison is the best transmission, but they have their problems as well. They are expensive to work on. A friend of mine has had three trucks with Allison. The only one he didn`t have problems with was a 1987 International 1700 flatbed. His 2nd one cost him $3500 for an exchange transmission. His 4700 now is not shifting right and it has less than 100000 miles.
The aftermarket parts are available to improve Dodge, Ford, or GM trannys. If you are towing with a Dodge a better torque converter and maybe a shift kit will do wonders. The stock converter lets too much fluid bypass (which causes overheating) when you are towing.
