I think you are talking about the tranny and transfer case gears. The early ones were not tapered and the later ones were. So for example an early PTO will not work with a later transmission. I think they went to the tapered gears about the same time they went to the sincro.
I believe that all of the ring and pinions are the same on all FF's.
