I also look for something better than needed. I was searching about 5 years ago after a harrowing ride back from Fairfield pulling a PW with a Bronco/351. The short wheelbase made for a few cold sweats!
I asked around and the consensus was LONG wheelbase truck to tow with, and gooseneck trailer with the hitchpin in the bed just ahead of the rear axle.
I looked for a year and went with Econoline, available in two or three axle, rear hitch or Gooseneck, single or dually setups from 16 to 40 foot lengths, 5 to 20 ton capacities. They have a system of dealers in every state, or you can buy over the phone/internet and save on the taxes.
