Do your timing off the number "1" cylinder by water pump. There are markings on the crankshaft pulley and an arrow off the timing chain cover to time it properly (TDC). Align the pulley’s “0” mark with the end point of the arrow.
If you look at the bottom of the cap, you will see the raised notch. Rotate that notch to 6 o'clock. Count two posts clockwise, the second post is for the number one spark plug wire. Position your distributor to line up with the second post. Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. After you start the engine, time it to 2 degrees ATDC (after top dead center) by using a timing light or using a radio.

Radio – Rotate the engine to 2 degrees ATDC. Tune your radio to a blank channel where you hear only noise. Place the radio close to the distributor; rotate the distributor until you hear a pop. That will be the points opening and you will be timed. Lock the distributor.
