Good questions and No good answer from me, the axles are stamped 44F, and they are ALL stamped that way, only by visually checking will you notice that the knuckles are bigger than the standard 44. When I looked for the one piece replacement axle the 44 1 ton was listed in the book, maybe that serial number can be tracked down but it doesn't help if the housing is not stamped?? As for the shift on the fly, I removed the two piece axle housing and replaced it with a standard one piece housing, some guys just cover the hole with a piece of sheet metal but I thought it was weaker with two pieces and replaced it. The one piece axle itself is sold by DANA and Moser (less bucks). Look at the photos you can see that the hole is gone.
