Hi al,
The Dana 44 HD is the same as the Dana 44 in axle size and tube diameter. From the knukles out however it is like a Dana 60. It doesn't have hubs from the factory due to the shift-on-the-fly feature, but Warn hubs will go right on it. It does have the shift on the fly port on the drivers side, unfortunately I didn't photograph it before I changed it over. Steve at Prototech can be reached at prototech@telusplanet.net
The axle pictured is the Dana 44 HD and it came that way, with the disc brakes. The only difference is that if you look you will see the shock tabs in front of the axle, this is the '64 W200 position, you just cut the tabs off of the stock rear position and reweld to the front, be careful that you do not place then in the way of the tie rod. This is done to clear the steering which on the '64 is behind the axle and conflicts with the '85 shock mounts. You just take the closed knuckle out and replace it with the open knuckle, in total, no need to covert to disc brakes, all axle after 72 had disc brakes and open knuckles. (some drums were optional until '74 I think) Go to my ImageEvent Album and see all of th ephotos under "Frame Off" http://photos.imageevent.com/moparnorm
If this post doesn't cover everything, e-mail me.
