If you have the space I'd suggest both. Reason being, you can abuse the knock off and not feel bad about it. I weld and heat stuff(Guess that won't happen in your basement) in the knock off and "save" less damaging stuff for the good vise.
This is one thing that I have done that works well. Take an old steel well casing.4-6" in diameter. Cut it to a comfortable height to work from. Weld some flat stock to the bottom of the pipe making a cross if you will. Put it in an old truck tire, the bigger the better. Fill it full of cement and you now have a moveable vise. Big enough to stay put but moveable if you wish. Come in handy over the years.
By the way, I've broke 3 cheap vises over the years.(From abuse)Vises are a good Auction/garage sale item. Cheaper than retail. You can get some serious$$$ in a good one. Hope this helps. Kevin
