GVW Rating Myths?

As I understand it, the Army load ratings for WC's and VC's are suppossed to be about 1/2 of what the truck is capable of carrying on an improved road. Is that true, or just an old myth? So the 1/2 ton WC's are really civilian 1 tons? The 3/4 tons are "really" 1.5 tons?

My WC-54 is rated to carry 1770 lbs in 4wd up a 60% grade, in the worst conditions possible, according to the manual and the tag on the dash. So then on a paved road, it should be good for 3540 lbs? Assuming, of course, the springs and axles and tires and so forth are all up to snuff and or rebuilt?

What is a B1PW or WDX or W300M or WM300 really capable of hauling? Where's "the truth" ?
