Welding fumes

During a maintenance shutdown at the pulp and paper mill that i work at,several of our welders and pipefitters were exposed to heavy metal fumes. A metal spraying operation that was inadequately vented caused the exposure.Subsequent testing showed 9 individuals to have higher than normal levels of chromium or cadmium,2 with higher than normal levels of aluminium or manganese and 3 with levels bordering on high.
All of us who work on our trucks or have family members working on them with us need to remember that welding, grinding or cutting can and will expose us to some long lasting fumes and vapors.Grinding body filler or paint /primer can also fill your lungs. If you have respirators and dust masks, wear them.If you don't have them, then get some.Get ones that fit your children if they are in the shop with you. They can't enjoy going for a ride with you if they can't breathe.
Sorry for the long post, but take care of yourselves and the ones you love. Dave
