I run a 4x4 tour in Peru w/ Toyota Land Cruisers & Hilux 4x4 where gasoline is $4 gal. Diesels there are plentiful including the Jeep Liberty. Most of the Japan & Euro 4x4 trucks are built w/ turbo diesel and perform great especially at altitude compared to gas.
Not as costly for the diesel options/models as here but total vehicle cost is more (taxes).
There are a few towns along the week long trail where I see M37s converted to diesel still used by the military.
