Joel I had a 96 2500 4x4 with the Cummins and auto 3:54 gears. I took 5 teeth off the ring gear and two from the pinion. I was pulling a trailer at the time but not pulling hard or heavy. I had no advance warning when it let go and I replaced the gears myself. Parts were $750, I don't know if this is your problem just letting you know what happened to mine. Have since sold the truck to another contractor who hasn't had any problem since. I had about 140k on it when it broke. Good luck
