Eric, no expert here, but it would depend on the state laws where the vehicle are going to be registered. In Nebraska, and out of state title coming into state, the VIN is checked against a hidden VIN ONLY if there isn't a matching one on the title and obvious showing tag. In other words if the paperwork appears to be correct, they don't question things. Somethings a little fishy, and they go for the hidden VIN. Being prior military, I've lived in a lot of different states and it seems they all have their own way of doing things. Some don't even go look at the VIN in the car, just look at your paperwork. An anonymous phone call to their local DMV could answer some questions without them having to give a lot of specifics. Nothing illegal, but why offer any more info than needed to get it registered?!? Best of luck to them! I'll be sending you my VIN this weekend!!
