More compression questions

Regarding the compression thread several lines down, I have another question. As was noted, compression gages vary in accuracy. Aviation mechanics check compression with some type of static method. The results are reported with two numbers, like 115/83. I am told that this is a more accurate method. I know we must have some A&P mechanics on the forum. How is this check done and what tools are needed?
