All the responses on this forum and the fact that I had cylinders 123 running rich and 456 running lean had me thinking about air leaks. It then dawned on me that I had not hooked up the new vacuum hose to the windsheild wipers. I had a steel line running into the firewall so when you looked at it everything appeared to be hooked up. Thinking about this some more I wasn't convinced that such a little leak would have caused the truck to run as bad as it did. Then like a fog lifting I realized that there was a much larger air leak to account for. I neglected to mention that this truck had come with a vacuum brake booster (add on?). I disconnected it and removed it from the truck a few years back (before body shop) to properly locate the battery since the diaphram was shot. I even took out the hose fitting in the manifold directly below the carb facing the back of the engine. Problem is I never plugged it though and the hole is not easily visible. I plugged the hole, hooked up the vacuum line to the wipers and now it runs great. I guess it is easy to lose track of stuff like this over time. When you have a problem sometimes it's best to take some time and think about it a while. And to post to this forum for excellent advise. Thanks for all your help. I pluged the hole 3/8" using a brass plug. Should I use cast iron? Now I'm worried about different expansion rates and cracking the manifold. Tex
