My memories only go back just to the early 80's in North Canton OH. During college I worked at one of the last full-service (mechanic on duty) stations in town. It was a owner/manager operated Sohio and NOT a convenience store! All of the descriptions from the other posts certainly applied (except for maybe those old types of oil). I did the weekend evening closing shift and had a lot of strange Sat nights. A lot of folks had car problems right before closing. I remember feeling so sorry for people who just didn't have the money to maintain their cars. Our stuff was so expensive! I'd send them off to K-mart with a list of what to get, then close up and fix it after hours. They'd be all thankful and want to give a recommendation to my manager. I'd have to say, "PLEASE don't do that! He'd fire me for not selling you our stuff!" Actually old Wally was a great guy and an even better boss.
One of my favorite memories was when the great-looking female customer all dressed up for work came in for gas in her husband's old CJ5. She apologised for the car explaining that hers was in the shop. As I started to wash the windsheild which was a required duty, she frantically insisted that I don't do it. I smiled and continued while all the water from the squeegee ran down through the rusted out windsheild frame and down into the lap of her dress!
My shirt was light blue with dark blue pinstripes and my face was beet red that night!
