Just wanted to give everyone a heads up on what I had happen to me this week. I changed the oil in the old 74 D200 last weekend. I bought a 5 qt jug and a 1qt of valvoline as the 440 takes 6 qts. Drained the oil and put a new filter on just like I have done a zillion times. Dumped the 5qt container in and the 1 qt container. Checked underneath for leaks and started the truck up. Pulled 80lbs of pressure and appeared to be normal. Shut off and pulled dipstick to recheck the oil level and the dipstick was dry?!?! Thought this was odd and checked the drain plug, took my contacts out and put my glass's on and even had a friend double check the oil level.........DRY!!!!!! I knew it had oil in it I just put 6 qts in it?!?!

Today I drained out the fresh oil and dumped 6 individual qts in it and the oil level came up like it always does on the dipstick. The only thing I can figure out is I got shorted in the 5qt jug I bought. I never did check the level of the container. It had the safety seal on it. I think it just didnt get enough oil from the factory in it!

I have a few rules I go by when changing oil. I always pull the dipstick and check and I always leave the empty containers in a row right there so I have an exact count of what I dump in.

Keep an eye on your containers make sure they are full when you start!
