There's the safety aspect but there's also the fact that getting a rusty old split rim or bolted-together rim apart and breaking the bead is just plain hard work, even more so without proper tools. The tire shops charge a flat rate, so if the tire's been on the rim since Eisenhower was pres, it's worth it to me to pay them to hammer and cuss for half an hour.
