As much as I hate to say it the Ford in this case would be the better truck for this job. A v8 dakota would pull ok but I dont think the truck itself could handle the tongue weight or be able to stop even with trailer brakes.
I have a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 and it pulls my 71 Charger just fine but I would say its probably at the maximum for a long haul with the wieght of the car and trailer.
Besides you'll have fun working the old iron!
