Practice on your shop pair first, then the household paper shears, before you attempt her good scissors:
To sharpen: Clamp one 'blade' in a vice, file skinny edge sharp. or open up scissors, grind w/fine stone on bench grinder. The edge is only a 5 degree angle, with sharp corner, not like a knife.

Pivot screw: should be adjusted loosely, 'blades' should be allowed to twist slightly in use, so that they only touch each other at the very corner/edge, thereby trapping the material between 2 very small points where the load of one hand will exceed the yield strength of the material being cut. (this 'twisting' is why they have to make left handed scissors and why normal scissors won't work left handed as they twist the wrong way)
