After a night of sleep, I am inclined to agree with your first idea of a "Parking Brake Type Lockup". If a drum was extended off one end of the swivel and the clamping band (like a brake band) was pulled in by Air or Hydraulics, it would be a tight lock up. Probably more than enough for 'road' travel. This would solve all alingment problems for engagement. It would be quick, can be done from the cab. And as you mention
, IF there is a reason to lock up in an articulated position, it can be done with infinite settings. I think this is something to think and expand on........
